What this role is really testing
The project
Beverage Category Shelf Story: A One-Page Selling Deck for a Fictional Retailer
A polished, data-backed one-page PDF 'selling story' that pitches a specific KDP beverage category (e.g., energy drinks or ready-to-drink coffee) to a fictional grocery retailer using real public market data, shopper trends, and a clear revenue opportunity. This mirrors the exact deliverable KDP interns produce, turning data into a persuasive narrative for a retail buyer, and demonstrates business storytelling, category thinking, and professional presentation skills in a format a recruiter can read in 60 seconds.
- Research one beverage category using freely available public sources (Nielsen IQ blog, Circana press releases, Statista free previews, or Google Trends): pull 3–5 concrete data points showing category growth, shopper demographics, or purchase occasion trends. Organize these into a simple narrative arc, 'here is the market opportunity, here is the shopper behavior driving it, here is the gap the retailer has not captured yet.'
- Open Google Slides or PowerPoint and build a single, visually clean slide (the 'selling story') structured in four sections: (1) Category Headline, one bold stat that grabs a buyer's attention; (2) Who Is the Shopper, two or three insight bullets with a simple chart or icon visual; (3) The Opportunity, a concise gap statement tying shopper behavior to a shelf or assortment recommendation; (4) The Ask, one clear, specific action the fictional retailer should take, written the way a sales rep would say it in a meeting.
- Export the finished slide as a PDF, then record a 90-second Loom or phone video of yourself presenting it as if you are pitching the fictional retailer's category buyer, this adds the 'presenting to a VP' dimension KDP explicitly lists and lets recruiters see both the artifact and your communication skills in one link.
