The project

Segment Profitability Mini-Case: A One-Page Financial Analysis Memo

The candidate picks a publicly traded life-sciences or industrial company (e.g., a Thermo Fisher competitor like Danaher or Agilent), pulls two years of segment data from their 10-K, and produces a crisp one-page executive memo that identifies which segment is underperforming, hypothesizes why, and recommends one concrete action with a rough quantified impact. This mirrors exactly what a Corporate Finance or Commercial Finance intern does: translate raw financial data into a decision-ready narrative for leadership.

  1. Download the most recent 10-K for a public life-sciences or diversified industrial company from SEC EDGAR; navigate to the segment footnote and copy two years of revenue, operating income, and operating margin for each reported segment into a clean Excel or Google Sheets table, add a column for year-over-year margin change and highlight the one segment whose margin deteriorated most.
  2. Build a second tab that constructs a simple bridge: start with prior-year operating income for that weak segment, then add labeled bars or rows for volume change, price/mix change, and cost change (estimate these from the MD&A narrative), so the reader can see exactly what drove the decline, this is the core analytical skill FLDP roles test.
  3. Write a one-page Word or Google Doc memo addressed to a fictional CFO: open with a one-sentence finding, present your bridge in an embedded table, offer two plausible root-cause hypotheses drawn from the MD&A, and close with one specific recommendation (e.g., price adjustment, SKU rationalization, or cost restructuring) plus a rough estimate of the margin-point recovery if the action succeeds, export to PDF so a recruiter can open it instantly.

Questions

Do I need to know how to code?

No. For roles like this one, Provieo builds the project as a live case-study page: slides, tables and findings you fill in. You bring the thinking.

Where did this project come from?

Provieo read the Thermo Fisher Scientific posting and generated it on 2026-10-21. If you paste the same posting yourself you may get a different project, so two applicants don't show up with the same one.

Is Provieo connected to Thermo Fisher Scientific?

No. This is an independent project idea based on a public posting. It does not guarantee an interview.
