The project

Health Plan Budget Variance Tracker

A polished Excel workbook that models a fictional health insurance plan's quarterly budget versus actuals across expense categories, flags variances with conditional formatting, and auto-generates a one-page summary report with charts. This maps directly to the role's core tasks, budget prep, trend analysis, expense accruals, and compiling financial reports, and shows advanced Excel skill on realistic healthcare finance data.

  1. Build the data layer: create a 'Raw Data' sheet with 12 months of fictional line items across five health-plan expense categories (medical claims, pharmacy, administrative, IT infrastructure, and member services). Include columns for Budget, Actual, and Prior Year Actual. Populate at least 60 rows using realistic dollar magnitudes (e.g., medical claims in the tens of millions) and introduce deliberate over- and under-budget patterns to make the analysis interesting.
  2. Build the analysis layer: add a 'Variance Dashboard' sheet that pulls from Raw Data using SUMIFS to aggregate by category and quarter. Calculate dollar variance (Actual minus Budget) and percent variance, then use conditional formatting to highlight cells red when variance exceeds 5% unfavorable and green when it exceeds 5% favorable. Add a sparkline column showing each category's 12-month actuals trend, and a pivot table that lets a reviewer slice by quarter or category in one click.
  3. Build the executive summary layer: add a 'Report' sheet styled to look like a real FP&A deliverable, company logo placeholder, report date, a two-sentence written narrative interpreting the largest variance (typed directly into the sheet), a clustered bar chart comparing Budget vs. Actual by category for the most recent quarter, and a line chart showing total spend trend vs. budget over all 12 months. Lock and protect the Report sheet so only the narrative cell is editable, demonstrating professional report packaging.

Questions

Do I need to know how to code?

No. For roles like this one, Provieo builds the project as a live case-study page: slides, tables and findings you fill in. You bring the thinking.

Where did this project come from?

Provieo read the Elevance Health posting and generated it on 2026-10-21. If you paste the same posting yourself you may get a different project, so two applicants don't show up with the same one.

Is Provieo connected to Elevance Health?

No. This is an independent project idea based on a public posting. It does not guarantee an interview.
