The project

Operational Risk Register & Control Gap Dashboard for a Sample Business Process

The candidate selects a familiar business process (e.g., expense reimbursement, inventory receiving, or vendor onboarding), builds a structured risk register in Excel that identifies inherent risks, existing controls, residual risk ratings, and mitigation owners, then visualizes the results in a one-page Power BI or Excel dashboard showing risk heat map, control coverage gaps, and top open items. This directly mirrors the intern's core duties: documenting processes, assessing control effectiveness, and presenting risk data to stakeholders in a digestible format.

  1. Map the chosen process by listing 6-10 key process steps in a flowchart tab (use Excel SmartArt or a simple table with arrows), then for each step identify at least one inherent risk, its likelihood (1-5) and impact (1-5), and the existing control that addresses it, leaving the control field blank where none exists to surface gaps; label each risk by category (Operational, Compliance, Financial, Technology) to match ERM taxonomy.
  2. Build a risk register table in a second Excel tab with columns for Risk ID, Process Step, Risk Description, Category, Likelihood, Impact, Inherent Risk Score (L×I), Control Description, Control Type (Preventive/Detective), Control Effectiveness (Effective/Partial/None), Residual Risk Score, Mitigation Action, and Owner; use conditional formatting to color-code residual scores red/yellow/green so a recruiter can see the heat map instantly without reading every row.
  3. Create a one-page summary dashboard tab using Excel pivot charts or Power BI visuals containing three elements: a 5×5 risk heat map plotting each risk by its residual likelihood and impact coordinates, a bar chart breaking down risks by category, and a small table flagging the top three control gaps with a one-sentence recommended action for each, format it cleanly with the company's public brand colors and a title block reading 'Internal Audit Process Risk Assessment' so it looks like a real deliverable.

Questions

Do I need to know how to code?

No. For roles like this one, Provieo builds the project as a live case-study page: slides, tables and findings you fill in. You bring the thinking.

Where did this project come from?

Provieo read the Insulet posting and generated it on 2026-10-28. If you paste the same posting yourself you may get a different project, so two applicants don't show up with the same one.

Is Provieo connected to Insulet?

No. This is an independent project idea based on a public posting. It does not guarantee an interview.
