The project

Insurance Premium Validation & Trend Analysis Tool

A Python script and accompanying Excel/CSV output that ingests a small synthetic life-insurance or annuity dataset, validates premium calculations against actuarial formulas, flags discrepancies, and summarizes loss-ratio trends across age bands and policy years. This maps directly to the intern role because it mirrors the validation tools and trend-analysis projects past interns have built, and it demonstrates Python fluency, actuarial formula literacy, and the ability to surface actionable findings for senior leaders.

  1. Generate a synthetic dataset (100–200 rows) as a CSV with columns for policyholder age, policy year, face amount, tabular mortality rate (q_x pulled from a published SOA Illustrative Life Table), actual claims paid, and collected premium; write a Python script using pandas that loads this file, computes the expected claims as face_amount × q_x for each row, calculates the actual-to-expected (A/E) ratio, and flags any policy where A/E deviates from 1.0 by more than 10%, printing a clean validation report that lists flagged rows, their deviation magnitude, and a PASS/FAIL summary count.
  2. Extend the script to group the validated data by five-year age band and policy year, compute the average A/E ratio and loss ratio (claims_paid / premium) for each group, and write the aggregated results to a formatted Excel workbook using openpyxl or xlsxwriter with two tabs, one for the row-level validation log and one for the trend summary table, applying conditional formatting so cells above the 10% deviation threshold are highlighted in red.
  3. Add a concise text block at the top of the Excel summary tab (written directly into a merged cell range) that narrates the three most notable trends found, for example which age band shows the highest A/E drift, whether older policy years are converging toward expected, and what a product pricing team should investigate, so the workbook functions as a self-contained deliverable a senior actuary can open, read, and act on without any additional explanation.

Questions

Do I need to know how to code?

No. For roles like this one, Provieo builds the project as a live case-study page: slides, tables and findings you fill in. You bring the thinking.

Where did this project come from?

Provieo read the Ameriprise Financial posting and generated it on 2026-10-28. If you paste the same posting yourself you may get a different project, so two applicants don't show up with the same one.

Is Provieo connected to Ameriprise Financial?

No. This is an independent project idea based on a public posting. It does not guarantee an interview.
