Business Insurance Underwriting Intern: a project built for this posting
Interns learn commercial insurance underwriting, which means judging whether a business risk is acceptable and how it should be priced, through coached assignments and training modules. They complete project work, such as a territorial risk or underwriting-gap analysis, and present it to local leaders during the 10-week program (early June to mid-August).

What this role is really testing
The project
Territorial Commercial Risk Assessment Memo
A one-page professional memo analyzing the underwriting risk and profitability opportunity of a specific industry segment (e.g., small restaurants) in a chosen metro area, using publicly available data on crime rates, weather risk, business density, and loss drivers. This directly mirrors the sample project Travelers names in the posting, a territorial risk assessment, and demonstrates the analytical thinking and structured communication underwriters use every day.
- Choose one commercial industry class (e.g., restaurants, retail, auto repair shops) and one metro area. Use free public sources, the NOAA storm events database, FBI crime data explorer, and the U.S. Census County Business Patterns, to pull three to five data points that a commercial underwriter would care about: severe weather frequency, property crime rate, business count and density, and any relevant local economic trend. Organize these into a simple table or comparison grid in a Word doc or Google Doc.
- Write a structured one-page underwriting memo with four labeled sections: (1) Territory Overview, what makes this area and industry class notable; (2) Risk Factors, the two or three data-backed exposures that would concern an underwriter and why; (3) Opportunity Factors, conditions that suggest the book could still be profitable with proper pricing or exclusions; (4) Recommendation, whether you would recommend writing new business in this segment, with one sentence of pricing or coverage rationale. Use plain business prose, no bullet dumps.
- Add a one-paragraph 'AI Limitations' note at the bottom of the memo documenting one thing you checked with an AI tool (e.g., asked ChatGPT to summarize regional flood risk) and explicitly flag where the AI output required your own verification or where it could have been misleading without human review, directly showing the AI critical-thinking skill Travelers calls out in the job description. Export the finished memo as a PDF so a recruiter can open it in one click.

Questions
Do I need to know how to code?
No. For roles like this one, Provieo builds the project as a live case-study page: slides, tables and findings you fill in. You bring the thinking.
Where did this project come from?
Provieo read the Travelers posting and generated it on 2026-10-16. If you paste the same posting yourself you may get a different project, so two applicants don't show up with the same one.
Is Provieo connected to Travelers?
No. This is an independent project idea based on a public posting. It does not guarantee an interview.
