The project

Insurance Segment P&L Dashboard with Variance Commentary

A one-page Excel or Google Sheets model that pulls publicly available combined-ratio and premium data from a major insurer's annual report, builds a simple P&L summary, and flags year-over-year variances with a written management commentary block, exactly the kind of financial planning and analysis deliverable Hartford's Finance interns produce. It shows a recruiter the candidate can find real financial data, structure it clearly, and explain what the numbers mean in plain business language.

  1. Download one or two years of segment financial data from a public insurer's annual report (e.g., net written premiums, losses incurred, underwriting expenses, and net income by segment); enter the figures into a clean spreadsheet with clearly labeled rows and columns, separating actuals by year so comparisons are easy to read.
  2. Build a concise P&L summary table that calculates loss ratio, expense ratio, combined ratio, and year-over-year dollar and percentage changes for each line; use conditional formatting to highlight variances greater than 5% so the eye is drawn immediately to what moved and why.
  3. Add a 'Management Commentary' text box beneath the table, three to five bullet points written in the style of a CFO report, that names the two or three biggest drivers of change, quantifies each impact in dollars, and states one forward-looking risk or opportunity; this commentary block is the artifact a recruiter opens and reads in under a minute to assess both analytical and communication skills.

Questions

Do I need to know how to code?

No. For roles like this one, Provieo builds the project as a live case-study page: slides, tables and findings you fill in. You bring the thinking.

Where did this project come from?

Provieo read the The Hartford posting and generated it on 2026-10-16. If you paste the same posting yourself you may get a different project, so two applicants don't show up with the same one.

Is Provieo connected to The Hartford?

No. This is an independent project idea based on a public posting. It does not guarantee an interview.
