Healthcare Analytics Intern: a project built for this posting

Placed in Cigna's Prospect Analytics team, the intern uses pharmacy and clinical data to build benchmarking metrics that help evaluate prospective clients and support finalist discussions. They also study RFP trends from consultants and coalitions, look for ways to automate standard bid answers, and present research findings to the team.

The project

Pharmacy Claim Benchmarking Dashboard (SQLite + Excel)

The candidate builds a small relational database of simulated pharmacy claims data, writes SQL queries to calculate benchmark metrics (average cost per claim, generic fill rate, and cost variance) across fictional client segments, and presents the findings in a formatted Excel summary table with a chart. This maps directly to the role's core task of aggregating pharmacy data, defining benchmark metrics across client segments, and supporting prospect evaluations.

  1. Download a free public dataset or generate a CSV of ~200 simulated pharmacy claims rows with columns: client_id, client_segment (e.g. 'Small Employer', 'Coalition', 'Health Plan'), drug_type ('Brand' or 'Generic'), claim_cost, and fill_date. Load it into a SQLite database using DB Browser for SQLite (free GUI) or Python's sqlite3 module, whichever you already know.
  2. Write and save at least four SQL queries: (1) average claim cost by client segment, (2) generic fill rate (generic claims / total claims) by segment, (3) standard deviation of claim cost per segment to show variation, and (4) a top-10 most expensive claims list. Screenshot or export each result set to a worksheet tab in Excel, labeling every tab clearly.
  3. In Excel, build a one-page 'Prospect Benchmarking Summary' sheet that combines the query outputs into a formatted table with conditional formatting to highlight segments above/below average cost, add a clustered bar chart comparing generic fill rate across segments, and write a 3-bullet 'Key Findings' text box a recruiter can read in 30 seconds, then save as a shareable .xlsx file.

Questions

Do I need to know how to code?

No. For roles like this one, Provieo builds the project as a live case-study page: slides, tables and findings you fill in. You bring the thinking.

Where did this project come from?

Provieo read the The Cigna Group posting and generated it on 2026-10-16. If you paste the same posting yourself you may get a different project, so two applicants don't show up with the same one.

Is Provieo connected to The Cigna Group?

No. This is an independent project idea based on a public posting. It does not guarantee an interview.
