R&D Process & Technology Development Intern: a project built for this posting
The intern joins one of Stryker's R&D groups (new product development, product engineering, or the test lab) to design, improve, or stress-test medical devices using CAD, FEA and lab fixtures. Work ranges from turning concepts into production-ready designs to running design verification tests that check products meet their technical specs.

What this role is really testing
The project
Medical Device Component Redesign Case Study
A structured one-page engineering design document that identifies a real failure mode in a common mechanical or medical device component, proposes a redesign using engineering reasoning, and presents annotated CAD sketches alongside a simple trade-off matrix. This maps directly to Stryker's Product Engineering and New Product Development tracks, which require interns to analyze product performance issues, research improvements, and communicate design decisions to cross-functional teams.
- Pick a simple, real-world mechanical component failure, for example, a surgical scissor hinge that loosens under cyclic loading, or a clamp that cracks at a stress concentration. Use FreeCAD (free, no license needed) to model the original geometry and your proposed redesign, highlighting the specific change (fillet radius increase, material swap, geometry reinforcement). Export clean screenshots of both models with dimensions labeled.
- Build a one-page trade-off matrix in Google Docs or Word comparing your original vs. redesign across four engineering criteria: estimated fatigue life, manufacturability, cost impact, and sterilization compatibility. Write two to three sentences of root cause analysis explaining what failure mode (fatigue, stress concentration, wear, etc.) you identified and why your design change addresses it, citing at least one real engineering principle by name (e.g., stress concentration factor Kt, S-N curve behavior).
- Combine the CAD screenshots, trade-off matrix, and root cause write-up into a clean two-page PDF laid out like an internal engineering design review slide, company-neutral branding, section headers matching Stryker's language ('Design Input,' 'Design Output,' 'Verification Approach'), and a final row in your matrix noting what bench test you would run to verify the fix, written the way a Test Lab intern would frame it.

Questions
Do I need to know how to code?
No. For roles like this one, Provieo builds the project as a live case-study page: slides, tables and findings you fill in. You bring the thinking.
Where did this project come from?
Provieo read the Stryker posting and generated it on 2026-10-16. If you paste the same posting yourself you may get a different project, so two applicants don't show up with the same one.
Is Provieo connected to Stryker?
No. This is an independent project idea based on a public posting. It does not guarantee an interview.
