What this role is really testing
The project
Quarterly Budget vs. Actual Variance Report for a Fictional Business Unit
A one-page Excel or Google Sheets workbook that models a fictional business unit's quarterly budget alongside actual results, calculates variances in both dollar and percentage terms, flags unfavorable items, and includes a short written management commentary explaining the key drivers. This directly mirrors the variance analysis, internal reporting, and budgeting work PNC Finance interns perform across Line of Business Support and Shared Services teams.
- Build a structured spreadsheet with three clearly labeled sections: a Budget tab with 8–10 line items across four quarters (revenue, headcount costs, occupancy, technology, etc.), an Actuals tab with plausible figures that deviate from budget by varying amounts, and a Variance Summary tab that automatically calculates dollar variance (Actual minus Budget) and percentage variance for each line item, using conditional formatting to highlight any line where the unfavorable variance exceeds 5%.
- Add a Waterfall or grouped bar chart on the Variance Summary tab that visualizes the top five favorable and unfavorable line items side by side, giving a recruiter an immediate visual read of where the business unit over- or under-spent relative to plan.
- Write a concise half-page 'Management Commentary' text box directly inside the workbook, formatted like a real finance team memo, that identifies the two largest unfavorable variances, proposes a plausible business explanation for each (e.g., higher-than-expected contractor spend due to a delayed hire), and states one forward-looking action to bring the next quarter back on track, demonstrating the analytical narrative skill PNC explicitly lists.

Questions
Do I need to know how to code?
No. For roles like this one, Provieo builds the project as a live case-study page: slides, tables and findings you fill in. You bring the thinking.
Where did this project come from?
Provieo read the PNC posting and generated it on 2026-10-16. If you paste the same posting yourself you may get a different project, so two applicants don't show up with the same one.
Is Provieo connected to PNC?
No. This is an independent project idea based on a public posting. It does not guarantee an interview.
